About Kelvin

The Kelvin Ensemble (commonly referred to as Kelvin) is the student-run orchestra for students at universities in Glasgow. We are a very friendly group of people, studying a wide range of courses, and are passionate about music!

We start auditioning for members at the end of September, and hold one concert at the end of Semester 1 (November) and Semester 2 (March). We also have a tour every May, after the end of exams.

The only member of the orchestra who is not a student is our professional conductor! This year, we are lucky to have John Grant, who is returning to conduct Kelvin.

We play a wide range of symphony music, chosen by the Kelvin committee. Last year, our repertoire included the works of Brahms, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams. A full list of our previous concerts can be found on the Past Concerts page.

We have regular rehearsals on Tuesday evenings in the Concert Hall — one of the rooms within the Main Building of the University of Glasgow. We will often have additional rehearsals in the weekends during the run-up to concerts.

Fresher's Week

If you would like to find out more, we will be holding an open rehearsal during the Glasgow Uni Fresher's Week in September. This year, the open rehearsal is on Saturday 21st September 14:00 - 16:00 in the UofG Concert Hall.

We will also be part of the 2019 University of Glasgow Fresher's Fair on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Feel free to talk to us and find out more.

We have many people eager to join Kelvin, so we hold auditions each academic year.

Auditions have finished for the academic year 2019/20. For more information, please visit the Join page.
